About the Aurora Trust

The Aurora Trust is an endowed philanthropic foundation, established in 1989 by Sarah Butler-Sloss and part of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts.

The Trust is committed to helping navigate the challenges of climate change and supporting the wellbeing of people and nature. We focus our work on:

  • Connecting people, especially children, with nature
  • Supporting regenerative, resilient farming in the UK
  • Accelerating the shift from fossil fuels towards a fair and healthy society powered by renewable energy
  • Stopping deforestation in Brazil and Indonesia
  • Backing innovative climate solutions in partnership with its sister organisation, Ashden Climate Solutions

In the last financial year alone, the Trust awarded over £3.1 million in grants across 52 projects.

About the Role

  • As a Trustee, you would have a significant role in guiding the strategic direction, the grant-making and other activities of the Trust. This would involve regular and some ad- hoc trustee meetings, and, if interested, opportunities to meet with and visit grantees and other partners and, participate in investment and impact investing discussions on these sub-committees.

About You

  • We are particularly interested in someone with expertise in communicating and engaging the public imagination to enable cultural and systemic change for a more sustainable society. We’d like you to have some good knowledge and curiosity about the Trust’s areas of focus and an understanding of charity governance and non-executive roles.
  • Commitment to the Nolan Principles of Public Life
  • You’ll also need the time and motivation to contribute effectively.
