Our client is a small friendly team based in Exeter, Devon. They work closely with their clients to give them a holistic service, really getting to know them and their businesses. They are looking for a new Tax Director to join the team.
Their ideal candidate will be:
- Experienced: You will be a Chartered Accountant, Association of Taxation Technicians, or Chartered Tax Adviser qualification and a minimum of 5 years post-qualified experience.
- Specialised in Tax: You will have strong technical skills in business tax or mixed tax, with the ability to provide commercial tax advice.
- Communicative: You’ll have great communication skills. You listen actively, articulate complex information, and build trust with a diverse portfolio of clients.
- Collaborative: You’ll be a team player who thrives in a collaborative environment and is willing to share knowledge, support colleagues and be happy to work as part of a team.

Role Overview
As a Tax Director, you will drive their new tax planning service forward, looking for new opportunities to help their clients save tax. You’ll have the full support of the team and from external Tax Consultants as required. You’ll need to be a bit of an all-rounder when it comes to tax, or willing to learn areas you are less confident in.
Key Responsibilities:
- Client Relationship Management: Build strong relationships with clients, understanding their goals and challenges, and proactively offering solutions that add value.
- Delivery of Taxation Services: Our client offers the opportunity to work on a varied client portfolio of mainly small and medium sized businesses. Your role will be diverse, looking holistically at all the taxes which affect a small business and its owners. You’ll liaise with the clients and rest of the team to gather data to be able to create bespoke tax planning reports, coming up with ideas to save clients tax, using both tried and tested methods and some out of the box thinking.
- Winning and Developing Work: Meeting and liaising with clients in connection with their tax matters. Responsible for making a significant contribution to the firm’s practice development in retaining and attracting clients and the development of specialist tax planning services. In particular, the roll out of their existing tax planning service to the rest of their client base.
- Colleague Relationship Management: Working with and supporting your colleagues, particularly with tax issues, providing advice, planning and reviewing projects, and working with the other Directors to deliver advisory services.
- Personal Development: Maintaining a high level of relevant technical knowledge.
- Communication: Communicating complex topics simply.
