Senior Electrical Design Engineer - Data Centres

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join our mission-critical engineering team, specialising in data centre design and delivery. This role involves leading electrical engineering packages across hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data centre projects. You will be responsible for concept to detailed design, client liaison, and guiding junior engineers.

The ideal candidate has deep technical knowledge of high-resilience power systems and a proven track record within the data centre sector.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Design & Technical Leadership

• Lead electrical design for data centre projects, including:
  
  
  
  • HV/LV distribution systems
  
  
  • UPS and standby generation
  
  
  • Switchgear and protection schemes
  
  
  • Earthing and bonding
  
  
  • Lighting, small power, and ancillary systems
  
  
  • SCADA, controls and monitoring systems
  
  
  
  


• Prepare concept, schematic, and detailed design packages including calculations, single-line diagrams (SLDs), technical specifications, and performance documents.


• Ensure designs comply with data centre best practice (e.g., Uptime Institute Tier Standards) and relevant regulations.


• Undertake power system studies including load flow, short-circuit analysis, discrimination studies, and arc-flash assessments.

Project Delivery & Coordination

• Manage electrical workstreams across multiple projects, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.


• Lead design meetings, technical workshops, and design reviews with multidisciplinary teams.


• Coordinate closely with clients, contractors, suppliers, and internal teams throughout all project stages.


• Support tender evaluations, technical queries, and commissioning planning.

Client Engagement

• Represent the electrical discipline in client meetings and presentations.


• Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders, ensuring clear communication around design decisions and project progress.

Team Leadership & Development

• Mentor junior and intermediate engineers, reviewing designs and guiding professional development.


• Support internal knowledge sharing, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Skills & Experience Required

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent).


• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards is highly desirable.


• Strong experience delivering electrical design for data centres (hyperscale/colo/enterprise).


• Solid understanding of:
  
  
  
  • Redundancy topologies (N, N+1, 2N, etc.)
  
  
  • Uptime Institute Tier certifications
  
  
  • Data centre cooling and integration considerations
  
  
  • UK and international electrical standards
  
  
  
  


• Proficiency with relevant design tools such as:
  
  
  
  • Power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP, PowerWorld, SKM, or similar)
  
  
  • Revit and AutoCAD
  
  
  • Amtech/Trimble ProDesign
  
  
  
  


• Strong client-facing communication and project coordination skills.


• Ability to lead projects independently while maintaining a collaborative approach.
