Role SummaryMechanical Design Engineer
Bolton (On-site)
4-Day Week | Monday–Thursday | 7:00am–5:00pm
This role is responsible for producing compliant, manufacturable mechanical design output for bespoke steel fabrications. You will generate accurate 3D models and fully detailed production drawings to support purchasing, manufacturing and operations, ensuring alignment with internal procedures and customer specifications.
The position requires a strong understanding of steel fabrication, structural behaviour and design for manufacture within regulated, high-integrity environments.
Key ResponsibilitiesProduce 3D models using Autodesk Inventor to meet project requirements
Generate compliant 2D manufacturing drawings in accordance with BS 8888
Deliver full Design for Manufacture (DFM) output, including GA drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, BOMs and as-built documentation
Ensure designs consider full product lifecycle (manufacture, installation, operation, maintenance)
Conduct Designer’s Risk Assessments and eliminate H&S risks in line with CDM regulations
Collaborate with analysis engineers to ensure design integrity and structural compliance
Ensure all documentation is accurate prior to release to Design Checkers
Contribute to continuous improvement and R&D initiatives
Maintain ISO 9001 compliance and schedule adherence
Essential:
HND (5+ years’ experience) or BEng (3+ years’ experience) in Mechanical Engineering or similar
Strong background in industrial steel/sheet metal fabrications
Proficient in Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and Vault
Working knowledge of BS 8888
Understanding of structural load paths, failure modes and steel manufacturing limitations (including press brake processes)
Ability to produce coherent Designer’s Risk Assessments
Desirable:
Knowledge of welding methods and tolerances
Understanding of tolerance stackings
iLogic / VB programming capability
Ability to obtain SC clearance
