Matron – Brain Injury Service

Location: Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability, Putney

Salary: Band 8a; £58,096 – £68,110 (dependent on experience), inclusive of high-cost area supplement

Contract Type: Permanent, Full-Time

The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN) is a national centre of excellence, delivering specialist care and rehabilitation for adults with complex neuro-disability. We are proud to be Pathway to Excellence® designated, reflecting our commitment to nursing leadership, shared decision-making, and a positive practice environment.

We are seeking a motivated and credible nurse leader to join our senior team as Matron for the Brain Injury Service. This is a key leadership role with responsibility for nursing standards, patient experience, workforce development, and service improvement across two specialist pathways: Complex Rehabilitation and Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness (PDOC).

You will be part of a collaborative and supportive leadership team committed to values-based care. Our organisational values—seeing the whole person, delivery on promises, willingness to learn, and honesty and integrity—are embedded in how we lead, care, and work together. These values are central to the Matron role and shape our culture across all services.

You do not need to have held a Matron post previously, but you must bring clinical credibility, sound judgement, and the ability to lead across professional groups. This is an excellent opportunity for a forward-thinking nurse ready to take the next step in their leadership career within a specialist setting.

We are proud to hold Leaders in Safeguarding Gold accreditation, recognising our robust approach to safeguarding practice. We are also a Mindful Employer, a Race Equality Matters Bronze Trailblazer, and a London Living Wage Employer, reflecting our commitment to inclusion, staff wellbeing, and fair employment. We have strong links with our local community and businesses in Putney and across South-West London, helping us stay connected, responsive, and engaged as both a care provider and employer.

We offer:

  • Wagestream platform for salary advances, savings, and financial coaching
  • Free workplace massages and on-site wellbeing activities, including yoga and pottery
  • Free on-site parking
  • Cycle2Work scheme and season ticket loans
  • Tech scheme with interest-free payment options for personal technology and home appliances
  • Active staff networks: Pride, Women’s, and Race Equality
  • Blue Light Card and other retail discounts
  • Access to career development through funded apprenticeships, leadership programmes, and in-house training

Equality and inclusion

The RHN values and celebrates diversity. We are committed to ensuring that no applicant, employee, or service user is treated less favourably on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, disability, religion or belief, age, gender identity, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, paternity, or marital/civil partnership status.

Applications are welcomed from applicants with disabilities, in line with our policy of promoting equality of opportunity. We can make reasonable adjustments and provide support throughout the recruitment process.

We are also committed to supporting staff to achieve a healthy work-life balance. Flexible working will be considered based on individual circumstances and service needs. Applicants are encouraged to discuss any requirements with the recruiting manager during the application or onboarding process.
