Lead Traffic Controller

Keen to join a courier business where speed, standards, and accountability aren't just words on a wall, then keep reading.

Our client is a nationwide same-day, time-critical courier operation with over 20 years in the business. They’re owner-managed, which means decisions happen fast, standards are visible, and the people who deliver results get noticed.

They’re growing, and they’re looking for an experienced Lead Traffic Controller to work alongside their new Logistics Team Manager to help run their high-volume logistics operation.

Their ideal applicant thrives on pace, owns problems, and has the skills to help them build a strong driver network.

The Role

This is a hands-on, front-line role where you will bridge the gap between their Logistics Team Manager and their skilled logistics team. Over the coming year, their core goal is to build and strengthen their Driver network, ensuring they have reliable, high-quality drivers where and when they need them.

Responsibilities include:

  • A hands-on traffic management role in a busy traffic operation, ensuring jobs are executed efficiently, accurately, and profitably.
  • Make real-time decisions on routing, allocation, and capacity.
  • Prioritise time-critical and high-value bookings without dropping service standards.
  • Own the full booking lifecycle – from enquiry to delivery.
  • Resolve service issues fast or escalate when needed.
  • Help our client build and develop a reliable core Driver pool which matches business demand.
  • Own ongoing Driver recruitment and onboarding (self-employed Drivers), ensuring quality and compliance.
  • Build strong relationships with top performing Drivers to improve retention.
  • Plan Driver coverage across key locations and peak times.
  • Reduce reliance on unknown subcontractors by strengthening their known network.
  • Drive higher standards through better selection, onboarding, and performance management.
  • Deputise for the Logistics Team Manager when needed.
  • Support and guide colleagues in a live operational environment.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating accountability, responsiveness, and continuous improvement.

Applicants must have:

  • Experience in same-day, courier, or time-critical logistics.
  • Solid understanding of live logistics operations and Driver coordination.
  • Background supporting or leading a team in a similar fast-paced environment.
  • Exposure to Driver management, recruitment, or onboarding.
  • Confident on the phone and email with customers.
  • Experience with TMS and dispatch systems.

The qualities which matter include:

  • Calm and solutions-focused when pressure hits.
  • Strong communicator – customers, colleagues, Drivers.
  • Organised, responsive, detail oriented.
  • Proactive with genuine ownership and accountability.
  • Leads by example.

Being honest, this is not a back-office or hands-off management role. It's fast-moving. Priorities shift. Service is everything. If you prefer a slower pace, rigid structure, or minimal change this probably isn't the right fit.

If you thrive on pace, problem-solving, and making things happen in real time, and are happy to take part in the team one week in 4 / 5 on-call rota to cover our client’s extended operating hours (£2k top up in basic salary), they would love to hear from you.

Why join our client:

  • Visible – Owner-managed means your work matters and gets seen.
  • Meaningful – Deliver high-quality, time-critical logistics every day.
  • Real development – To build genuine team management experience in a live environment.
  • Growth opportunity – As they grow, so do your opportunities to progress.
