The Role – Highway Engineer

Due to ongoing operational requirements and long-term infrastructure contracts, our client is seeking a Highway Engineer to join their Operations team.



This is a permanent position based in Belfast, offering the opportunity to work on a major highway maintenance contract, supporting asset lifecycle management, maintenance schemes, and improvement works across the network.



Key Responsibilities




  • Oversee the delivery of highway operations and maintenance works in line with DBFO1 contract requirements

  • Ensure all works are carried out in compliance with Health & Safety standards and regulations

  • Manage inspections, defect identification, and repair programmes across allocated asset classes

  • Plan and coordinate works using risk reduction and cost comparison methodologies

  • Accurately capture costs and support budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting

  • Develop annual maintenance and inspection programmes with the wider operations team

  • Use RMMS database to manage network data and generate work orders

  • Procure subcontractors and manage delivery of works on site

  • Identify and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and performance

  • Participate in regular planning and coordination meetings with internal teams



Candidate Requirements




  • Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline

  • Previous experience in a similar engineering or highways role

  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety and highway maintenance processes

  • Good knowledge of asset management and maintenance delivery

  • Strong planning and organisational skills

  • Computer literate with experience using databases/systems

  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills

  • Good negotiation and problem-solving abilities
