The Role
As an MEP Design Manager, you'll take responsibility for the design development of Mechanical, Electrical, and Public Health systems across key construction projects. You’ll collaborate with consultants, contractors, and in-house teams to ensure the delivery of safe, efficient, and compliant designs from tender through to project handover.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee the design of HVAC, fire protection, public health, and electrical systems in line with cost plans and value engineering goals
Lead the production of technical reports, proposals, and basis of design documents
Manage and coordinate the MEP design team, setting deliverables and monitoring progress
Work collaboratively with architectural, structural, and project management disciplines
Coordinate sub-contractors and design consultants, addressing issues early through EWNs or NCNs
Evaluate design quality, progress, and decisions; maintain records for project delivery
Conduct site visits and technical workshops as required
Manage design budgets and liaise with external consultants and suppliers
Review BIM/Revit/Navisworks models for coordination, compliance, and buildability
Ensure designs meet all regulatory, code, and 3rd-party requirements
Contribute to ongoing project reporting and documentation
Additional Responsibilities:
Support early-stage cost plans with engineering calculations and design strategies
Identify design risks and value engineering opportunities
Issue and track RFIs during all project stages and support project handover
Assist in reviewing supplier quotes and consultant fee claims for technical accuracy
Provide minor technical support to other departments, including FM and traditional project teams
Person Specification:
Minimum Level 3 qualification in Mechanical Engineering (HNC/HND/NVQ4 or equivalent)
Strong background in mechanical design coordination and planning
Proven leadership or team management experience
Working knowledge of building codes, compliance, and MEP regulations
Familiarity with BIM/3D modelling and digital coordination tools (preferred)
Understanding of cost management and commercial aspects of engineering solutions
Professional membership (IET, CIBSE, IHEEM) desirable but not essential
Contract management experience with technical knowledge may also be considered
