Chair of Trustees (Volunteer)

Chair of Trustees – POW Nottingham

POW Nottingham is seeking an exceptional Chair of Trustees to lead the organisation through a period of significant change, renewal and opportunity. If you are a strategic, compassionate and values driven leader who believes in the rights, dignity and self determination of sex workers, this is a rare chance to guide a vital charity at a pivotal moment in its history.

About POW Nottingham

POW Nottingham is a non-profit, voluntary organisation supporting sex workers and those at risk of exploitation. We champion the rights of individuals to make informed choices about their lives, including the right to remain in or leave sex work. Our work focuses on empowerment, harm reduction, advocacy and ending stigma, while ensuring access to essential health, wellbeing and safety services.

We provide holistic support through drop ins, specialist clinics, outreach, and casework, recognising the complex and varied needs of our community. Our beneficiaries consistently describe POW as a trusted, respectful and non judgemental space often a lifeline during moments of crisis.

Following the closure of our building and a temporary pause in services last year, POW is undergoing a structural reset. With plans to reopen our building in 2026 and relaunch services once funding is secured, we are rebuilding our governance, strategy and leadership. The new Chair will play a central role in shaping this next chapter.

The Role of Chair

As Chair of Trustees, you will provide leadership to the Board and support the organisation to deliver its mission with clarity, accountability and ambition. You will guide the development and implementation of POW’s new strategy, ensure strong governance, and work closely with the incoming CEO to build a resilient, sustainable and impactful organisation.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the Board to ensure effective governance, strategic oversight and collective decision making
  • Ensuring the charity remains focused on the needs, rights and wellbeing of its service users
  • Supporting and constructively challenging the CEO and leadership team
  • Safeguarding POW’s assets, reputation and long term sustainability
  • Championing the Charity Governance Code and Nolan Principles
  • Creating a culture of openness, accountability and inclusive leadership

  • Charity governance or previous trustee/chair roles
  • Organisational change or turnaround
  • Strategic leadership in complex environments
  • Finance, HR, fundraising or public affairs
  • Working with marginalised or stigmatised communities

Above all, you will bring sound judgement, integrity, strong communication skills and the ability to lead collaboratively.
